Nefertiti between the past and the present with contemporary eyes

Nefertiti

If the unfinished works in the Egyptian Museum related to our ancient Egyptian heritage are still inspiring to our creators and artists, It would rather to the completed works that were looted and illegally exited from Egypt if they were returned back to our big house, the great museum worthy of all our Egyptian treasures, how much will be the inspiration and creativity for our generations of current, contemporary, and upcoming artists.

Nathan Doss

Doss was inspired by the idea of the statue of Nefertiti from the statue in the Berlin museum, as he carries the genes of the ancient Egyptian artist with unique art, and this is evident in his vision of Egyptian antiquities abroad as a source of creativity and inspiration, as he says: "I think that the statue of Nefertiti in the Berlin Museum of the ancient Egyptian artist Thutmose, which belongs to the Amarna era during the reign of Akhenaten, is a unique model.

The artist started the block with limestone, and I think that there was a dialogue between Nefertiti, Akhenaten, and the artist about making some changes to the face, and the limestone did not help the artist, so he added plaster; then he coloured the statue to merge the two raw materials.

I think that the artist considered that statue a “maquette” for a greater work made of quartzite. But fate did not allow him to complete it, perhaps because of the revolution against Akhenaten. It did not help him to complete his religious project, nor did the ancient Egyptian sculptor Thutmose, to complete his artistic project. So he left us this unfinished statue in the Akhenaten collection in the Egyptian Museum, as we find in the work an interlocking position for the crown without completing it. The graphite lines are still clear on some parts of the statue, and my artistic project comes about re-presenting the statue of Nefertiti, or rather completing the unfinished statue after more than three thousand years, following the approach of our ancestors, but in a contemporary way.”
