The monument memorializes the Battle of Bash-Aparan, which took place between 21st and 29th May 1918 and was one of three decisive Armenian victories during World War I that halted the Ottoman/Turkish invasion of Eastern Armenia.
The Armenian victories at Bash Abaran, Sardarabad and Karakilisa, were instrumental in allowing the formation of the short-lived First Republic of Armenia.
