Babajanyan was a well-known Armenian composer during the Soviet Era. The statue was sculpted by the Armenian sculptor David Bejanyan.

It was originally placed at its location on the corner of Tumanian and Terian Streets in September 2002, before it was unveiled on July 4, 2003, on the banks of Yerevan's small and scenic "Swan Lake" by Yerevan mayor Yervand Zakharyan with the musician's famous «Nocturne» playing as background music.

The author is the sculptor David Bejanyan, who was pictured playing the piano. The controversial statue depicts the composer’s personality and explosive musicality while playing his piano.
